As our colleague said there is no exact rule for this. You may search on a dictionary or you can also come and ask for help here. Smile

Let me just add to the information given by SteelInferno that in this particular case the correct word is "Vietnamita"

Vietnamita

adj. Do Vietname. / &151; Adj. e s.m. e s.f. Natural ou habitante do Vietname. / &151; S.m. Uma das línguas faladas no Vietname.

Many nationalities in Portuguese end in -ês/a. When you do not know a language profusely, it is only natural you use the general rules and disregard the exceptions and also use similar rules to your other language. Seems that if Portuguese is português, Vietnamese is vietnamês.

Unfortunately, languages are not always logical. English is inglês, French is francês but Spanish is not espanholês. In this case you will just have to learn the correct noun/adjective as there is no exact rule.

Hi there

Here in Australia every Portuguese I know refers to the people of Vietnam as well as their language as "Vietnamês".

The other day someone told me that this world doesn't exist in the Portuguese vocabulary. Is this true? What the Portuguese word for "Vietnamese"(both language and people from that country).
