False friends: Actually/Actualmente

Post by Kangas on Tue Jul 10, 2012 10:26 am

Another excellent example of False friends in English and Portuguese are adverds Actually and Actualmente. Again, when you look at both words, you may think they both mean the same thing ... well they don't ... Evil or Very Mad

In English, the adverb actually is used to define something that is a fact, a reality. In Portuguese, this adverb would be translated as "de facto, na realidade, na verdade". But in Portuguese, the adverb actualmente means "currently", which is not the same thing of course.
