Sports unite people all over the world. But there are still some barriers to be conquered in this field. Sure there are some sports that pose no issues as they are known and played worldwide, I’m thinking of sports like tennis, baskeball, handball and even football which some countries refer to as soccer. But the same can’t be said about other sports that may be very popular in some countries and totally unknown in others. So when you try to talk about these sports in other countries that may not know about them, you need to be mindful of that fact and try to explain what they are. If you are a translator that is no different, you need to research and know the culture of the country where the sport is played so you can better understand what it is and then translate it the best way possible. It is not an easy task I must admit as sometimes there is very little information about these things.

This week we talked about Rugby League (in Australia NRL – National Rugby League). This is one of the codes of rugby and it’s very popular in countries like the United Kingdom and Australia. There are a few technical differences from the well-known Rugby Union game, but the main differences are the number of players, which in Rugby League are 13, it is played with a slightly lighter and smaller ball and the number of tackles allowed before changeover is counted. In Portuguese it’s best translated as Râguebi de 13 even though it can also be referred as Liga Râguebi.

O desporto une povos por todo o mundo. Mas existem algumas barreiras por conquistar neste campo. Certamente existem modalidades desportivas que não apresentam quaisquer problemas, uma vez que são praticadas e conhecidas em todo o mundo, falo de modalidades como o ténis, o basquetebol, andebol e até mesmo futebol (football) que em alguns países é conhecido como “soccer”. Mas o mesmo não acontece com outras modalidades, , que podem ser bastante populares em determinados países e totalmente desconhecidas noutros. Portanto quando tentamos falar destas modalidades noutros países que podem não ter conhecimento destas, temos que ter em mente esse facto e tentar explicar o que são. No caso de um tradutor isto não é muito diferente, é necessário pesquisar e ter conhecimento da cultura do país onde este é praticado, para poder ter uma noção do que é e traduzí-lo da melhor forma. Devo confessar que não é tarefa fácil, pois por vezes existe muito pouca informação sobre estas coisas.

Esta semana falámos de “Rugby League” (na Austrália NRL – National Rugby League). Este é uma das modalidades de râguebi e é bastante popular em determinados países como o Reino Unido e a Austrália. Existem algumas diferenças técnicas em relação ao conhecido “Rugby Union”, mas as mais importantes referem-se ao número de jogadores, que em “Rugby League” é de 13, é jogado com uma bola ligeiramente mais leve e mais pequena e o número de placagens permitidas antes da bola mudar de equipa são contadas. Em português a melhor forma de traduzir será Râguebi de 13, embora também se encontre Liga Râguebi.
