Sports unite people all over the world. But there are still some barriers to be conquered in this field. Sure there are some sports that pose no issues as they are known and played worldwide, I’m thinking of sports like tennis, baskeball, handball and even football which some countries refer to as soccer. But the same can’t be said about other sports that may be very popular in some countries and totally unknown in others. So when you try to talk about these sports in other countries that may not know about them, you need to be mindful of that fact and try to explain what they are. If you are a translator that is no different, you need to research and know the culture of the country where the sport is played so you can better understand what it is and then translate it the best way possible. It is not an easy task I must admit as sometimes there is very little information about these things.

This week’s term is one of those sports that is very popular in one country but may be known in others. I’m talking about Australian Football League (AFL) or as it is commonly referred to in Australia “Aussie Rules”. AFL is classified as a contact sport and it’s played by 2 teams of 18 players and 4 interchange players. It is played in an oval-shaped grass pitch and with an oval-shaped ball. The objective of the game is to score a goal which happens when a team kicks the ball through two posts situated at each end of the oval. It is played in 4 quarters of 20 minutes each and teams change their attack position on each of these quarters. Each game is overseen by an umpire, who starts the match after a siren goes off, by bouncing the ball on the ground. The translation to this sport into Portuguese is “Futebol Australiano”.

O desporto une povos por todo o mundo. Mas existem algumas barreiras por conquistar neste campo. Certamente existem modalidades desportivas que não apresentam quaisquer problemas, uma vez que são praticadas e conhecidas em todo o mundo, falo de modalidades como o ténis, o basquetebol, andebol e até mesmo futebol (football) que em alguns países é conhecido como “soccer”. Mas o mesmo não acontece com outras modalidades, que podem ser bastante populares em determinados países e totalmente desconhecidas noutros. Portanto quando tentamos falar destas modalidades noutros países que podem não ter conhecimento destas, temos que ter em mente esse facto e tentar explicar o que são. No caso de um tradutor isto não é muito diferente, é necessário pesquisar e ter conhecimento da cultura do país onde este é praticado, para poder ter uma noção do que é e traduzí-lo da melhor forma. Devo confessar que não é tarefa fácil, pois por vezes existe muito pouca informação sobre estas coisas.

O termo desta semana refere-se a uma dessas modalidades, que é bastante popular num determinado país, mas pode ser desconhecida noutros. Falo de Australian Football League (AFL) ou como é normalmente referido na Austrália: “Aussie Rules”. O AFL está classificado como um desporto de contacto e é jogado por duas equipas de 18 jogadores cada, mais 4 jogadores suplentes. É jogado num campo relvado de forma oval e com uma bola também de forma oval. O objectivo do jogo é marcar golos, o que acontece quando a bola passa por entre os dois postes que estão situados em cada extremidade do campo oval. O jogo é disputado em quarto períodos de 20 minutos cada e as equipas mudam de campo em cada um destes períodos. A tradução em português para esta modalidade é Futebol Australiano.
