The Inch (plural inches) is a unit of length used in some countries like Canada, United Kingdom and United Estates. It is part of the Imperial System. In the U.K., since 1st of October 1995, it was established that the inch (along with the foot) was to be used as a primary unit for road signs and related measurements of distance (with possible exeption of clearance heights and widths) and it should also continue to be used as a secondary indication for other purposes, following the Metric (International) System.

The inch owes its name to the Latin word "uncia" which means "one-twelfth part" and for this particular case would be one-twelfth of a foot.

In some languages the word "inch" is similar or even the same as the word "thumb". Portuguese is one of those languages where you have "polegada" for "inch" and "polegar" for "thumb". This may be because the inch could have derived from the foot unit in Latin used during the Roman Period.

A polegada (polegadas no plural) é uma unidade de comprimento utilizada em determinados países, tais como o Canadá, o Reino Unido e os Estados Unidos. Faz parte do Sistema Imperial. No Reino Unido, desde 1 de Outubro de 1995, foi estabelecido que a polegada (tal como o pé) deveria ser utilizada como unidade primária em sinais de trânsito e outras medidas de distância relacionadas (com possível excepção de alturas e larguras de segurança) e deveria continuar também a ser utilizada noutros casos, como uma indicação segundária, seguindo o Sistema Métrico (Internacional).

A polegada deve o seu nome à palavra latina "uncia", que significa "duodécima parte", que neste caso representa a duodécima parte de um pé.

Em algumas línguas, a palavra equivalente à palavra inglesa "inch" é semelhante ou igual à palavra "polegar". A língua portuguesa é uma dessas línguas, em que temos "inch" traduzido por "polegada". Isto poderá dever-se aos facto de que a polegada poderá ter derivado da unidade de pé em latim, durante o Período Romano.
